What is NLP ?
It’s a bit of a mouthful isn’t it!
We can package it in all different sorts of ways; essentially NLP provides tools for success.
It originally started as the studying of the mind and how you recreate excellence. The founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder spent their time modelling excellent individuals to work out what they were doing and, more importantly, how they were doing it. They wanted to know the difference that made the difference. The first people to be studied included Hypnotherapist Milton Eriksson MD, family therapist Virginia Satir and gestalt therapist Fritz Perls. These people were studies as they all produced magical change in people.
Lets break it down:
Neuro – The mind and the nervous system. This is where we gather and process information from our 5 senses – Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Olfactory and Gustatory. This is how we gather information on the world surrounding us.
Linguistics – Language. This also means non verbal language – hand gestures, facial expressions, and internal dialogue.
Programming – patterns, programs and strategies that enable us to behave.
It’s an art and a science; if it was just a science then there would be just one definition. Believe me there’s lots; as it’s an art it is open to individual interpretation.
A definition that I like would be that the language we use creates and shapes the world that we live in, not describe it. The NLP techniques enable us to change, adopt, and eliminate behaviours as desired. It provides you with the skills and ability to choose your mental, emotional and physical states at will.
NLP gives you a manual for understanding how your necktop computer works and how to programme the software of your mind. It enables us to communicate with ourselves and to interface with others.
