NLP in Sport
We have all watched and marvelled at our favourite sports player and how they can compete against the odds.
We have seen the way Tiger Woods strides down the fairway, and the favourite position of Johnny Wilkinson when he goes for the conversion.
Athletes are taking a more holistic approach to the way they train and perform. Its not just about pumping iron, it’s about making sure that you are in the best physical and mental state that they can be in.
So how can NLP help?
People know that the body affects the mind and the mind can affect the body and NLP provides a very effective route to identify what accounts for the results that you get – whether these are favourable or unfavourable results!
In sport, it helps to get rid of the limiting beliefs and focus on what you want.
Focus is a major part of sport and if we keep telling ourselves we “can never putt” or “I can’t get out of the blocks fast enough”; then we won’t make that putt and we’ll be behind the rest of the athletic field. NLP can give you unique tools and techniques to enable you to focus on what you want. Even by changing the use of your language you can change your performance.
Anchoring comes into play in sport. Behavioural psychologists believe that our behaviours are as a result of anchors- a series of anchors that are a series of conditional reflexes. The learning of new things is simply setting up and linking anchors. We are all in charge of our state, at any time we can be in a motivated or confident state, this is where anchoring comes in.
NLP gives you specific tools and techniques to ensure that you know what you want out of your sport and how to get it.
